Week 1
This week, I made a self-portrait using procreate inspired by a portrait I found online. It links to identity because behind the main portrait, I drew a lot of things that relate to me behind my head. I think this links to my project very well because of the topic of identity. I was very pleased with the final product, and I will also be using the app Procreate to animate parts of my actual FMP video.
I also made a rough plan for my final product, however, I need to do more planning so that when it comes to recording the video, I can do it as efficiently and quickly as possible so that no one's time is wasted; my filming requires a lot of other people.
Week 2
This week, I wrote a plan for my PechaKucha and made a Google Slides presentation to go with it. This is very effective because it means I'll be well prepared when it comes to presenting it. For each slide, I included a few images and on notion I wrote roughly what I would say for each slide. I am confident that my PechaKucha will show exactly what I will be doing in my FMP when I present it.
Week 3
I Presented my PechaKucha this week. It went quite well because I made it very easy to understand what my project was about, and each slide was relevant to what I was saying. The feedback I got from the class and others also showed this. Some things I could've done better is talk slower and be less nervous before going up to the front. Some feedback I have received from the class is attached below.
I also started scripting each person's question on the recordings so that I won't need to waste people's time a lot. To make it genuine, I asked each person the questions I'll ask them and then transcribed what they said as they were scripting. This way, when I actually record it, the people being interviewed won't have to think for long about what they are going to say (their initial responses are already written down).
Week 4
I started producing the intro of my video (includes script and animation) this week and it's gone very well. To animate the character, I used Procreate on my iPad which is very effective to use with After Effects, but its a very long winded process because if I want to change anything, I have to re export all the .pngs and bring them into my After Effects project again. To make this process more efficient, I might invest in the new procreate which was made just for animation.
On the Practical Skills section, I wrote thoroughly about the process of making the intro of my video. I think this went quite well and I go in a lot of depth about what I did on each step of making the video.
Week 5
After receiving INTERIM Assessment feedback from Annette on Wednesday, I realised that my Evaluation & Reflection section was lacking in content compared to the rest of my project, so I added more detail to every week in this section of my work.
On Wednesday, I did research on a certain type of shot I can use in my FMP - Shot-Reverse Shots. This will be very useful because these kind of shots are usually used for dialogue-heavy scenes, and most of my video is going to include those kind of scenes. This will be very useful in my FMP because I can use this knowledge when I do my recording. This is in the Research section of my blogger. I also drew some examples of how this will look on Procreate on my iPad, E.G. Taren's interview on a bench in a park. This will be extremely useful for me because I will be able to look at those sketches whilst I am recording with each person and know exactly what angles to use which will make the recordings a lot more efficient and will make sure no one's time will be wasted.
I did some research of ChainsFr's videos. This went well because I was able to see how effectively he made his videos and I was able to take inspiration from some clips and make them better, for example, the whiteboard scene.
I recorded the first interview (fashion). It went quite well but a few changes could be made to the focus of the camera and the lighting. For example, the naked bulbs were in the shot for the wide shot which meant it was too bright and the 3/4 shot was out of focus. The video is in Practical Skills.
Week 6
On Monday, I re-recorded the fashion interview 2 more times because the first time, the focus and lighting wasn't that good. To get some advice on what to do differently, I asked my dad who does filming and graphic design as his job a few questions on what I should change if I re record it. This is what he said:
- Make sure your shots are in focus (this is something that can’t be ‘fixed in post’)
- Make sure there are no hot spots (naked bulbs) in shot.
- Have someone (anyone) sitting in place for the interview whilst setting up the lights.
After taking this advice, I re recorded it for a second time, but after bringing the footage onto my laptop, I realised it was way too dark. I was annoyed, but I re recorded it for a final time in the afternoon and it ended up much better than both versions.
On Tuesday, I recorded the health interview at the allotment near my house with my mum. It went quite well; the audio was quite crispy despite the wind and the footage was in focus. The only problem was that the sun kept getting covered so the footage looked darker at certain points. I also forgot to get an introduction and I didn't get different angles because I knew I had to record it again. I was also in a rush because I had a driving lesson soon after, so next time I record I will make sure I'm not in a rush.
Week 7
This week, Monday was a bank holiday, but on Wednesday, I re-recorded my mum's interview at the allotment. It went a lot better because the lighting wasn't changing from the clouds covering the sun, so I was able to keep the lighting consistent throughout the recording. I also recorded 2 other angles so that I could edit it with shot-reverse-shots. However, I might record the watering can angle again because I didn't have a tall tripod so instead I was holding the camera myself.
On Thursday, I edited the footage I recorded on Wednesday, and added subtitles and music. I didn't add the animation because I have to redraw a few angles. I also animated the character in which went quite well.
Week 8
This is the final week. I recorded Rohan's peace interview in central London which turned out practically perfect, however it would've been a bit better if the area was a bit more lit up by the sun. After this, I animated in the character to his part and edited it, and also finished the subtitles in the rest of the videos. After making a lot of finishing touches, I exported the final version of the video and started my evaluation.
Evaluation
My initial concept for my final project was a mixed media animated video interviewing multiple people about different parts of identity such as fashion, money, health etc. I was trying to show people how there are lots of aspects to identity because a lot of people think identity is one thing. The audience was going to be all ages, apart from very young children because of the complexity of the topic. I had to use a lot of skills which included editing, sound design, animation, script writing and filming. I was very passionate about this project and I will definitely use it in my portfolio.
I did mostly primary research and analysed a YouTuber @ChainsFr's channel. He makes similar animations to the one I made but in a very different style. I did lots of research on his videos and used a few ideas from his work such as using still images in the background which I used in the introduction of my interview video. However, my video was a lot different because he never implements real footage in his videos. I also did some experimental design of my character by remaking an artwork of April German's in my own style. I also did research on the demographic which was all ages but primarily include teenagers/school children. I think I planned my video very well and I was able to make it knowing exactly what I wanted. I managed my time quite well, however because I had to re record a few times, I wasn't able to interview as many people as I wanted, but in the end it worked out perfectly because the video's length was 3 minutes long and I was able to cover quite a few aspects of identity.
To target my audience, I made the video as interesting as possible; implementing subtitles, scene changes, different camera angles and music.
I did not run into any contextual issues when making my video. I also didn't challenge any media theories or conventions.
I have learnt more about Adobe Audition whilst making this video, however I used my previous skills to make the rest of the video because I have been using After Effects and Premiere Pro for a very long time now so there was barely anything new I had to learn to edit or animate the video. I also used Procreate which I have been using for a very long time. However, I did use feedback from some people whilst making the video.
My final video resembled my initial ideas a lot. It was almost exactly how I expected it to be, however, when I was initially planning the video, I was hoping it would be longer, but it turned out well because the video was entertaining and wasn't too dragged out; all the people that watched it liked it.
